What to Do If Your Car Gets Flooded in Dubai

Published

Stay Calm and Prioritise Your Safety

Flash floods hit the UAE without much warning. If your car is caught in rising water, your first priority is personal safety, not the vehicle. Turn off the engine immediately, unbuckle your seatbelt, and exit the car if the water is still below door level. Move to higher ground and call emergency services on 999 if you or any passengers are in danger.

Once you are safe, resist every urge to restart the engine. Even turning the key to the accessory position can send current through water-damaged electronics and cause short circuits that are expensive to repair.

Do Not Start the Engine

This is the single most important rule after a flood. When water enters the air intake and reaches the cylinders, attempting to start the engine causes a condition called hydrolock. Because water does not compress the way air does, the pistons slam into an incompressible liquid, bending connecting rods and cracking the engine block. A repair bill that might have been a few thousand dirhams for drying and cleaning can instantly become a total engine replacement costing AED 20,000 or more.

Leave the ignition off. Do not press the start button. Do not even open and close the doors with the key fob if you can avoid it, because the central locking system runs on the same electrical circuit as other modules.

Document Everything for Your Insurance Claim

While the scene is still fresh, take as many photos and videos as possible. Capture the following:

  • Water level marks on the exterior and interior of the vehicle
  • Surrounding area showing the extent of flooding on the road or in the parking area
  • Dashboard and instrument cluster showing any warning lights that are on
  • Interior cabin including the footwells, seats, and boot area
  • Date and time stamps on your phone camera (make sure they are enabled)

These photos become critical evidence when you file your insurance claim. Insurance companies in the UAE often request visual proof of the water level your vehicle was exposed to, and claims submitted with thorough documentation are processed significantly faster.

Call for a Flatbed Tow

Never allow your car to be towed using a hook-and-chain or dolly method after a flood. The only safe option is a flatbed truck. Dragging the vehicle through water or along the road can force additional water into the transmission, exhaust, and differential, turning a manageable situation into a catastrophic one.

Request a flatbed tow to a dry, covered location, ideally a garage that specialises in flood damage. If you are unsure where to take the vehicle, MyFloodedCar can dispatch a flatbed and recommend an appropriate facility based on your location and vehicle make.

File a Police Report or RTA Incident Report

Most insurance companies in the UAE require a police report or an RTA incident number before they will process a flood damage claim. In Dubai, you can file a report through the Dubai Police app or by visiting a police station. In other emirates, contact the local police non-emergency line. Keep the report number safe as you will need it for every step of the claims process.

Notify Your Insurance Company Within 48 Hours

UAE insurance policies typically require you to report an incident within 48 hours. Contact your insurer as soon as possible and provide them with your police report number, photos, and a brief description of what happened. If you have comprehensive coverage, flood damage is almost always included. Third-party policies generally do not cover damage to your own vehicle.

Avoid Common Mistakes

In the panic that follows a flood, many drivers make mistakes that cost them thousands of dirhams or void their insurance coverage entirely. Here are the most common errors to avoid:

  • Do not attempt to dry the car yourself using household fans or leaving it in the sun. Professional water extraction equipment is needed to remove moisture from areas you cannot reach.
  • Do not disconnect the battery unless you know exactly what you are doing. Modern vehicles store fault codes that technicians need for diagnosis, and improper disconnection can reset those codes.
  • Do not delay. Mould begins growing inside a wet vehicle within 24 to 48 hours in UAE humidity. The longer you wait, the more extensive and expensive the damage becomes.
  • Do not accept a verbal repair quote without a written inspection report. You need documented evidence of every fault for your insurance claim.
